The HOLLEREI Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of current works by Werner Schreyer. Internationally known primarily as a fashion model and actor, Schreyer has also studied economics & social economics, various theatre programmes, as well as fine arts. Within this educational canon, painting is his most recent activity – one he pursues with particular verve.

As a model, Schreyer is a prototypical object: what is desired is the surface. This surface, however, always seems to be pierced by Schreyer's charisma – he transcends this object status by lending it, through his nature, through his individuality, its own kind of subjectivity.

Companies book him to profit from his image. In his artistic work, however, Schreyer operates decidedly away from images: in the eternal medium of painting, he focuses on what is perhaps essential, perhaps primordial: colours and forms, more precisely: colours and formlessnesses. Here, colours are used to achieve an almost formless effect. Schreyer is a colour field painter who is at times less interested in the result than in specific processes of chromaticity. He pursues both maximum contrasts and saturations as well as sensitive monochromies. He mixes the most diverse techniques and gestures to realise ideas and moods – knowing that these will always transcend direct representability.

The exhibited works thus show, not least, Schreyer's reflections on authenticity: what is authentic – which contents, which forms – and which colours would one use in such an authenticity process.

We are pleased to once again expand the HOLLEREI Gallery's focus on emergent artistic practices through this exhibition.
